Synopsis:
This is another study involving the word 物 (IPA: mɐt6). It is quite usual to hear the phrase 今日 (IPA: kɐm1 + jɐt6) meaning “today” to sound like 今物 (IPA: kɐm1 + mɐt6). The author of the book, scholar Jim came up with a quotation in a classical literature to justify the word 物 meant “day” and therefore 今物 is literally “today”. The research of the word in the quoted literature came up with another interpretation. The word 物 meant “kind” or “type”. The phrase in the quotation 同物 means “same kind of” or “same type of” rather the “same day”. This article takes the position that the phrase 今日 sounds like IPA: kɐm1 + mɐt6 only because the speakers tend to roll the two words together, resulting in IPA: kɐmɐt6. As such, there is no case of 物 to be considered. The Original Character in this case is none other than the word 日.
